What does self-managed mean for my Smart VPS, and how do I ask for help?

Self-managed means you're the sysadmin; we keep the hardware and network running and cheerfully answer what we can.

Steps

Smart VPS is an unmanaged service. You are responsible for the operating system, software, updates, security, and backups on your VPS. We're responsible for the platform it runs on.

  1. Try the self-service tools first. From the VPS page at https://noc.versaweb.com you can switch the VPS on or off with the Status switch, Reboot, open More (the three dots at the top right) for Shutdown and Rebuild, attach an ISO from ISO List, and open the Serial console.
  2. Check the other Smart VPS articles for your topic: first login, console, firewall, SSH lockout, and so on.
  3. If it's still broken, open a ticket in the client area under Technical Support (general problems go there, not to Network Engineering).
  4. Put the key facts in the ticket:

    • your VPS's IP address
    • what you were trying to do
    • the exact error message, copied as text
    • what changed just before it broke
    • what you've already tried
  5. Say whether it is urgent. A VPS that is down for reasons outside your own software is worth saying clearly.
  6. Reply on the same ticket with new details so the history stays together.

Our welcome email says that if you get in over your head, open a ticket and we'll do our best to help. Fixing problems inside the operating system is generally yours to handle, and OS-level help may be billed at our remote hands rate. Ask in the ticket if you want a quote first.

If it didn't work

  • Not sure whether the problem is the platform or your software? Open the ticket anyway and say so.
  • Need hands-on management? Tell us in the ticket and we'll go over the options.
