How does bandwidth throttling work on my Smart VPS?

Our Smart VPS bandwidth is advertised as unmetered, with one footnote worth reading before a big month.

Steps

Your plan's name (XS, SM, MD, LG, or XL) is on the Smart VPS Servers list at https://noc.versaweb.com (Services, then Smart VPS Servers). The plan code appears under the product name, for example vps.amd.md is MD.

  1. Find your plan's threshold in this table:

    | Plan | Port speed | Monthly traffic threshold | Speed after threshold | |---|---|---|---| | XS | 500 Mbps | 10 TB | 10 Mbps | | SM | 1 Gbps | 25 TB | 10 Mbps | | MD, LG, XL | 1 Gbps | 50 TB | 25 Mbps |

  1. Check your usage. Log in to the portal, click Services, then Smart VPS Servers, and open your VPS. In the left menu expand Usage and click Network traffic. That graph shows speed (kBytes per second), not monthly totals. For a total, use vnstat in the next step, or the Bandwidth line on the Overview page.
  2. On the VPS, a quick look at live traffic: install vnstat (apt install vnstat -y or dnf install vnstat -y) and run vnstat -m for monthly totals.
  3. If you're approaching your threshold, reduce heavy transfers, put a CDN in front of public downloads, or move large jobs to a plan with a higher threshold.
  4. If you were slowed down and expected full speed, compare the date and your monthly usage to the table above.

The footnote on our Smart VPS page describes the adjustment as a change in port capacity after the stated amount of monthly traffic.

If it didn't work

  • Note the time, and a download speed from any large file on a fast host, so we can compare.
  • Not sure whether you've been throttled, or want to talk about moving to a larger plan? Open a ticket under Technical Support with your IP address, plan, and the dates you saw slowdowns.
