How do I get to my dedicated server's IPMI console?

IPMI is the keyboard, monitor, and power button for a server in a building you can't walk into. Here's how to reach it.

Steps

Which method you get depends on your hardware, and we haven't finalised which applies to which. Try the steps in order.

  1. Log in at https://noc.versaweb.com, click Services, and open your dedicated server.
  2. Look below the bandwidth graph for a button marked Launch KVM Console. If it's there, click it. That's the whole job.
  3. If there is no button, scroll the service details for the IPMI section. It lists the IPMI web address, IP address, and username. The password is hidden; click the link next to it to show it.
  4. Open the IPMI address in a web browser and log in with those details.
  5. Use the console view to see the screen and the power menu to reset or power the server.
  6. If you were using a Java-based console and it won't launch, make sure your Java is current.

If it didn't work

  • If the IPMI page doesn't load, try a different browser or network. Some IPMI units are slow to respond.
  • If the login is rejected, or the page hangs, the IPMI unit may need a reset. Open a ticket, set Department to Technical Support, and ask us to reset it. Allow 1 to 2 minutes for it to come back. On some Dell hardware the reset requires a hard power cycle of the server, so anything that doesn't start at boot may need starting by hand afterwards.
  • If you can't find any IPMI details at all, open the same ticket with your Main IP and we'll create a user-level login.
